A LITTLE ABOUT ME:

This is my fifth year of teaching Kindergarten.  I am from a small town called Baileyville KS, and I graduated from Bethel College in 04 where I played college basketball.  My husband Zack and I have a one year old daughter named Brynlee.  She has taken most of our summer time!  Mr. Westhoff is also the PE teacher down here at KES/KMS.  I also do some coaching both at Kingman Middle School and Kingman High School.  I do Head Jr. High Basketball and Head Softball.

Class Announcements
Read Read READ! :)
As we are beginning to take AR tests, reading at home becomes more and more important!  When you see an AR book come home (one with a red dot on the spine) you can read this book to your child.  After reading it one time, have them try and read it on their own.  Then ask questions about what you read about.

We are also approaching some really fun activities and days!  This week is Kansas Day and the 100th Day we have been in school!!!  YEAH!  Next week is Groundhogs day and soon approaching is Valentines Day.  Also coming up is Dr. Seuss's Birthday.  We have been working on rhyming in the classroom so all these activities are going to be a lot of fun!

Sentence formation has been a focus some in the last few weeks.  Talk to your child about starting sentences with a capital letter, spaces between and using an ending mark.  Have them write for you.  Give them a word and see if they can make a sentence for you!  You will be surprised what they can do!

Thanks again for all your support from home.  You help make your child enjoy learning!
WE HAVE A VOWEL
This last week we have started making, reading and writing words because we have a vowel from the alphabet!  We learned that the letter A can say its name and its sound.  You can help your child by using the letters m, n, f, v, p, b and a to make words.

We have also began talking about the seasons and apples and writing our numbers to 20.

The new words that we have learned are the color words, number words, and the sight words, (a, and, the, I).  Keep working on these at home to help your child.
We Are Off To a GREAT START! :)
This year is going to be SO much fun!!  We are already doing so many fun things here in the classroom!  We are going to the computer lab one time a week (Tuesdays) which the kids are loving!  We also go to the Library on time a week (Monday's) where they can check out a book for the week.   We have been working with the "special" letters last week M and N; special meaning the sound comes out of our noses.  This week we are starting letters F and V.  At home, you can work on letter formation and sounds of these letters.  We are also going to be working a lot on number formation.  You can have your child write numbers to ten and eventually go on to 100!  Continue reading to your child at home as that will really help them as we are learning to READ!
WELCOME!!
Kindergarten
Instructor: Mrs. Westhoff
I am looking forward to a great year!  I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to be your child’s teacher this year and look forward to working closely with you and your child.  Thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation.

Lunch
We will eat lunch from 12:05-12:30 each day. Children may bring a packed lunch from home or eat a school lunch. If you would like to join your child for lunch, please let the office know.

Weekly Homework
Homework will be sent home once a week.  Your child should complete this work by themselves, under your supervision, and return it to school sometime the following week! Completing and returning homework helps build a sense of responsibility and prepares him/her for the homework he/she will have to complete in later school years. Homework should be your child’s best work.  Returning neatly completed work will allow the students to earn stickers; once they have filled their homework chart they will receive a prize or a hat day!!

Computers and Library
We are fortunate enough to have five computers in our classroom and a computer lab in our school.  We will visit the computer lab once a week for 30 minutes.  We use a variety of age-appropriate programs that reinforce math, and reading skills.  Children will also work on the computers during center time.

The children go to the library once a week. In the library they will be entertained with a story.  The children will have a chance to select a book to borrow for a week.

Birthdays
Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he/she may bring a store bought treat for the class.  If your child has a summer birthday we can arrange a time to celebrate it (on their half birthday or during the last week of school).
